8 Ways God speaks to Us Today

The goodness of God

The goodness of God is immeasurable. The wisdom and grandeur of God cannot be completely understood, yet He communes with us, He speaks to us and call us His own. One phrase that I always say to my friends and family is that “God never lets his children fall into a hole.” I stand convicted to that statement, understanding that if we fall, it is not because God did not warn us, but that we didn’t listen. We paid no attention to the signs or the red flags. One thing I know for sure is that God is always speaking.

We serve a detail-oriented God, if we look closely, we’ll see Him. We’ll see that He never left our side in those “silent” seasons.  Read our article Hearing versus listening to God.

Back to Genesis

The first time God spoke to man, was in the Garden of Eden. “And the LORD God, commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.” Genesis 2:16-17. We see here that the first words God spoke to man were a warning in the form of a command.

After the fall of man, sin entered and separated us from direct communication with God. “Therefore the LORD God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken.” Genesis 3:23.

Though we are physically separated from God, He doesn’t leave us to our own devices. Romans 8:39 says For I am persuadd that neither death nor life, not angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, not height nor depth, nor other created things, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

8 Ways God Speaks to Us Today

1. His Word: The Bible is our blueprint. It is the primary way that God speaks to us. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 says “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.”

2. Prayer: Prayer is our lifeline, it is the means in which we connect and communicate with God. Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7

3. People – wise counsel: In the Bible, we see that God loved used people to give instruction, warning, and direction to others. Jonah warned the people of Nineveh, to turn from their wicked ways. Likewise, God uses individuals in our lives to address certain issues that we may or may not be aware of. Proverbs 19:20 says “Listen to counsel and receive instruction, That you may be wise in your latter days.”

4. Circumstances: As stated earlier, God is not coy concerning us, and he often uses circumstances as teachable moments. Although these experiences may be trying; God uses them for our good, to edify and lead us in the right direction. “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose”. Romans 8:28. 5. Intuition – Gut feeling: Our intuition, or instinct is there as an alarm or siren; that is meant to protect us from harm. Our Intuition can be directly tied to our discernment, which is a spiritual gift. Hebrews 5:14 says “But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.”

6. Nature: Nature reveals the glory of God. I love how David says it in Psalm 8:3-4 “When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, The moon, and the stars, which You have ordained, What is man that You are mindful of him, And the son of man that You visit him?” Nature teaches us more about God and His love for humanity. It shows us discipline, principle, law, fellowship, and love. Romans 1:20 says “For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse.”

7. Dreams and visions: Dreams and visions is another way that God may speak to some. Acts 2:17 says. “And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams.”

8. His still small voice: From the old testament to the new, God spoke. Generations pass, times are different, but God remains the same. Hebrews 13:8 says “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” Meaning that he still speaks this way to some people. Those who are privileged to hear the whispering voice of God can attest to its comforting truth, and guidance.

God is not limited, whether he speaks to you through His word, through prayer, wise counsel, circumstances, intuition, nature, dreams, and visions or His still small voice, one thing is for sure “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.” John 10:27

Let’s talk in the comments below. God speaks to us all differently. What are some ways that God speak to you, and what are some ways after reading this you realize now that God used to reach you? Also, how do you know that it was God speaking? And finally, what are some other ways that God speak to us today?

Message so enriched. God speaks. One time God hit/slap my leg and I wake to pray. He redirect me to Open a Verse in the Bible during circumstance which would have stop me from worshipping him, He direct my foot step to go to church instead of going home whereas i suppose to go home after work. not knowing some men in my office sent an hired killer to harm that day. But when i get to the church to pray and read the bible, I told my self, let me just relax a bit, I slept off till the next morning, when I get back home, I realized some hired killer came to my house.

Hi, Thank you for an open door to share! I have the gift of dreams and visions. It has been like this all my life. I have a book that I’m working on, of how YHWH speaks to us all. I keep feeling the need to share it, but fear and finance give excuse to not getting it published. I have seen Jesus! A very detailed look. I have seen things in my dreams that line up with what Ezekiel seen, like the golden rings, and priests in ancient garments. I have a wealth of information. Please pray for me to know how to proceed on both issues. God Bless you. I feel better to have shared my worries.

Thanks you for this message. As I read it my heart was stirred for truly God has spoken to me so many times. In Thanksgiving for this my eyes tear as I am writing this message. He leads and guides me daily. He hears my prayers. May I share one example? One morning I was getting ready to go out and run some errands. The past 24 hours leading up to this point had been very trying for me. Home situations were taking a toll on me. This ranged from problems that needed attention with the house (air conditioning repair, washer repair) to the relationship with my husband. It seemed like whatever I tried to do as a sweet, good and helpful gesture was interpreted as trying to boss. It hurt and I prayed that God would strengthen me and help me to patiently persevere and do the right thing. I got into the car and turned on the radio. The song that began playing was Anthony Brown and Group Therapy’s song “I Got That V-I-C-T-O-R-Y”. I listened and began to feel better. When it finished some advertising began. I didn’t want to hear that so I turned to another station. What began playing was Anthony Brown and Group Therapy’s song “I Got That V-I-C-T-O-R-Y”. I thought “my, this is great.” I listened with more assurance that every thing would be alright. When the song was over it was the end of that program and another was about to begin. I didn’t want to listen to that so I moved to another station. Yes, you guessed it playing was Anthony Brown and Group Therapy’s song “I Got That V-I-C-T-O-R-Y”. With that I knew God was speaking to me and saying things would be alright. I smiled and thanked Him. God Is Good and I know that with Him I can and will make it. God bless you and may H e continue to make you a blessing.

I learned that dreams are not to be taken for granted because they can be positive or negative. This is why it is always good to pray for your dreams so that bad ones will be cancel from your life. Thanks again Cherly.

Amen! You touched on some interesting points. However whatever way God speaks to us. One thing is sure which you’ve mentioned above, and it’s that he will not direct us contrary to his word. This is how I know that God is speaking to me because he will lead me to obey and follow his law.
