How to overcome Christian struggles

The Struggle

As one who was a  lukewarm, lackluster, backsliding, comfortable in sin “Christian”. I understand the struggle to stay steadfast in our walk with Christ. The struggle to not be swayed by social pressures, and the world’s smoked mirror, fabrication of the “good life”. We all have had that inner struggle; God or flesh? And at some point we tried cradling the finch, walking that fine line, while losing conviction and justifying sin. At the end of it all, we lost a lot and gained nothing in return.

The fight between the flesh and the spirit was highlighted by Paul when he said, “…For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out.  For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing. Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it.” Romans 7:18-20.

We all have fallen short, but don’t stay down, God is waiting, he hasn’t left you yet. Get up and repent. “Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts. And do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God.” Romans 6:12-13

Our Help

The struggles we face as Christians are real, but we serve a God who has the power to help us overcome it all. “I will lift up my eyes to the hills, From whence comes my help? My help comes from the LordWho made heaven and earth.” God is our helper, with Him we win.

How to Overcome

We have to choose repentance. 2 Chronicles 7:14 says “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.”

After repentance comes maintenance. We have to stay connected and pursue God daily. Make prayer second nature. Study the Word of God, go at your own pace but stay consistent, and ask for understanding. Christian books and devotionals are extremely helpful. Also, find a small group of godfearing individuals that can help you in your walk with Christ, that can provide support and good godly advice. Finally, find an accountability partner that you can trust, and be open to constructive input as they seek to direct you in love.

That is so true! God is calling his people to a higher standard, and that’s to be like him. God is holy so we too must be holy! Of course we are not called to do this by ourselves but humanity must be partnered with divinity to accomplish this. Christ came as our example, so we must look to him as our guide. Thank you for your post! It is encouraging! May God bless your ministry! It will be a blessing to many!

Amen! Love what you said Trish, that “humanity must be partnered with divinity to accomplish this.” So true, we definitely can’t do it alone, we must humble ourselves before the Throne of grace and ask for help. With the divine help of God, He will see us through. Thank you for your wonderful comment, God bless you.
